bryden wood

Bryden Wood

Since the formation of Bryden Wood in 1995, we have been striving to change the construction industry. Our aim is to transform it into a product-based, integrated, design-lead industry. We believe that this can be achieved without any compromise in aesthetic merit, architectural integrity or functional performance.

To achieve this goal, we have a truly multi-disciplinary workforce, consisting of architects, product designers and engineers specialising in advanced low energy structural and environmental design, software writers, building information modellers and factory-based constructors. Increasingly, the distinction between these disciplines is being blurred, as we continually refine the process of fully integrating and co-ordinating design through to fabrication.

On projects where we perform a partial service, our unique offering makes us better informed in all areas. We are happy to work collaboratively with other design professionals, and well equipped to communicate with manufacturers and suppliers. Our commitment to transform the construction industry has culminated in running our own construction facility, providing us with the capacity to build and test low embodied energy structures in timber, high c ement replacement concrete and low weight steel. This facility produces Bryden Wood’s EcoCanopy building system, as well as other buildings, prototypes and products for the construction industry. By investing in our own developments (including research and development of systems) we are able to demonstrate not only our commitment to put into practice our ideals,
but also to experience for ourselves the true financial and practical implications of what we are trying to achieve.

The factor common to all aspects of our work is that we aim to drive efficiency and value through bringing a construction logic into the design process. Our ultimate aim is to instigate a new integrity in architectural design and construction.

With a highly flexible and customisable module design, capable of catering for the widest variety of building shapes, the company’s expertise has progressively been applied across the full spectrum of building applications. Significant projects have been undertaken in Ministry of Defence (MoD), hotel, residential, student, retail (food), medical and education sectors where the basic robust steel frame design has been adapted to provide an equivalent structure to that of a traditional in situ construction process but with the inherent advantages of a fully 3D off-site methodology.

ela8 logo

ela8

ela8 is a specialist R&D tax relief consultancy with clients ranging from large FTSE 100 nternational groups to small startup companies. ela8 most often puts together the whole R&D tax claim, covering both the technical justification and costing side, but can also supply just advice. Usually a claim is done on a contingent basis, where our fees are agreed to be a percentage of what is finally agreed with HMRC – effectively a no-win no-fee situation.

Before starting ela8 in early 2007, Gareth Edwards was a director of the awardwinning Deloitte R&D tax services group. Although an expert in the R&D tax legislation, his background is in technology with over 25 years of industrial R&D experience. It is this expertise that enables ela8 to provide the insights into eligibility that many accounting firms find difficult to achieve. ela8 have already made successful claims for a number of clients in the off-site construction industry.

Eurobond

Eurobond-SkanDek Limited

SkanDek is a proven construction system that follows the trend industry for the prefabrication of high performance building elements. It is equally applicable to new build and refurbishment. SkanDek can be integrated into a building's structure whatever the construction material – steel, concrete, timber, masonry or composite structure.

The SkanDek structural element can be installed with single ply membrane and ceiling finishes both in place. Installation rates of over 2000m² per day of finished roof have been achieved.
It is based on a patented lightweight box girder beam that offers an impressive spanning capability of up to 22m. This superior strength and stiffness can be put to good use spanning shorter distances at higher loads. Large cantilevers can be provided and roof construction can be flat or pitched.

About 500,000m² of SkanDek elements have been installed in Europe in a wide range of building types. The system is fully tested and is the first product of its type to have gained CE Mark status. Design programs and an extensive detail library are available – all with the backing of independent assessment by the Steel Construction Institute and the award of their SCI Assessed standard.

fusion logo

Fusion

Fusion Building Systems was established in 2000, in response to a growing demand for off-site building solutions in the UK and Ireland. Fusion has significant experience in having supplied and installed building solutions to over 5,000 buildings, ranging from care homes and housing developments of up to 700 homes, to luxury six storey apartment developments, to various hotels and even a five star hotel complex, not forgetting numerous individual dwellings.

Operating from an 80,000 sq ft “built for purpose” centrally located Northampton headquarters, Fusion continues to lead the way in off-site methods of construction with the engineering, manufacture and installation of pre-insulated, panelised light gauge steel frame super-structures.

Fusion utilises its excellent development legacy to provide a true “super-structure” solution. Our in-house structural engineers undertake all aspects of design work including incorporating hot rolled steel as needed and producing structural calculations to assist the main contractor in achieving “in ground” savings.

Fusion reached new heights in 2011 with certification for full structures up to 10 storeys, which has opened even greater areas of opportunity.

Fusion’s “infill” panelised solution for HRS or concrete frame continues to gain momentum.

Lloyd's Register EMEA

The Lloyd’s Register Group is an organisation that delivers business performance and safety enhancements through asset management and business systems assessment.

To facilitate this, we set, uphold and apply high technical standards of design, manufacture, construction, maintenance, operation and performance across many sectors to the benefit of businesses and communities alike. We are a global safety and risk management organisation serving the following sectors: off-site construction, utilities, ports and logistics, power, nuclear, marine, and oil and gas.

In recognition of a marked reluctance by lenders to lend against innovative construction and Buildoffsite, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), Lloyd’s Register (LR) and BLP established a working group with the lenders; Santander, Lloyd’s Banking Group, RBS and Nationwide. The purpose of the group was to understand the lenders’ concerns and formulate a process that would provide assurance to the lending community that risks associated with lending against innovatively constructed properties would be limited. That process has been defined and established, and is the Buildoffsite Property Assurance Scheme.

Lloyd’s Register will be supported in the assessment process by BLP.

Metpolice

Metropolitan Police

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) serves a population of over 7.5 million living in an area of 1,579 sq kms. The population is expected to rise to 8.1million by 2016. Policing in London is a 24 hour seven days a week operation delivered by over 50,000 people.

Buildings play a vital role in supporting the delivery of effective and efficient policing for communities across the capital. The estate currently comprises just under 1,000,000 sq m and in the order of 900 properties. The MPS are committed to providing Londoners with a customer focused, effective, value for money service that is constantly responsive to the needs of the communities we serve.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) – the MPS have a strong commitment to the principles of social, economic and environmental sustainability. In our long term profiling of the estate we are taking into account:
- energy costs of our building
- our responsibilities towards Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC)
- environmental target set back central Government as well as the GLA.

The MPS faces many challenges over the new few years – responding to a growing and diverse population, collaborating with new partners and working within increasingly difficult financial constraints. These challenges will impact on the whole service including how we procure our new buildings and use our existing facilities.

Mott MacDonald

Mott MacDonald is a £1 billion global management, engineering and development consultancy with 14,000 staff working in 140 countries. We work in all sectors from buildings, transport, energy, water and the environment to health and education, industry and communications.

Building information modelling – BIM – is set to become an integral part of the construction industry. Mott MacDonald is an early adopter of BIM, and as a result our customers are reaping the benefits of better resolved solutions, faster project delivery, improved risk management, enhanced sustainability and improved whole-life performance.

Working within Anglian Water’s @one Alliance, we have pioneered “product-based delivery”, playing a key role in developing the approach that is now successfully being used. The @one Alliance has developed 60 standard products that can be accessed via an online catalogue. This has helped to streamline design, procurement and project delivery, contributing to cost savings of up to 45 per cent, time savings of up to 90 per cent, waste reduction and improvements in health and safety.

We are also using BIM on a number of other key projects including Victoria Station Upgrade. Here it is contributing to the management of the design and construction risks involved in enlarging and modernising one of London Underground’s busiest stations; in a congested urban environment, alongside continuing passenger services.

Networkrail

Network Rail

Network Rail owns and operates Britain’s rail infrastructure.

We run, maintain and develop Britain’s tracks, signalling system, rail bridges, tunnels, level crossings, viaducts and 18 key stations. Network Rail is a “not for dividend” company and all our profits go straight back into improving the railway. Our mission is to provide a safe, reliable and efficient railway fit for the 21st century.

When Network Rail took over the railway network in October 2002, we inherited a tired, worn-out infrastructure that had been starved of investment for many years. Network Rail represents a new beginning, a new vision and a new way of delivering Britain’s railway. We are investing in our workforce and introducing new technologies. There are around 35,000 of us at Network Rail and we are working hard to improve every aspect of the railway. We have made enormous progress, and under our stewardship, the railway is already safer, more reliable and more efficient.

We are ambitious for the future of the railway and wish to grow the railway, meeting the demands and aspirations of rail users. Our task now is to build on the progress we have made so that we can transform Britain’s railway into a world-class infrastructure.
