Buildoffsite has teamed up with the Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network (MBEKTN) to deliver a Workshop Session which will take place between 2.00pm and 3.30pm on Wednesday 29 September at the Department for Business’s 1 Victoria Street, London, Conference Centre. The subject for this Workshop and the associated discussion will focus on the opportunities and potential requirements for buildings to be designed and constructed to be more readily capable of deconstruction and recycling.
Overview
This deconstruction involves the selective dismantling of buildings and building components, specifically for reuse and recycling. Emerging legislative drivers, including the EU Construction Products Regulations, will require industry to look in detail at every aspect of the process from design to demolition, looking at the 'recyclability of the construction works, their components and materials after demolition.
Whilst the increased adoption of offsite construction solutions is leading to significant reductions in the levels of waste generated during the construction process, the next stage is to look at the opportunities to design buildings that can be adapted throughout their life cycle, including the end of life implications. This topic may be part of a future Technology Strategy Board funding call and this initial workshop will help scope the issue, the opportunities and the need for enabling research.
This Workshop and Discussion
This session, led by Peter Ball of the MBEKTN, will engage with the workshop participants to identify the business opportunities and identify the research and other gaps in this emerging area.
